Good to know

  • Take photos or video of the whole car, including tires, underside, interior, fuel gauge and mileage. Have existing damage written on the form before you sign.
  • Don't sign anything before you've seen the car. Keep your pickup and return paperwork and your last gas receipt.
  • Damage claims at return for small or preexisting damage happen mostly with the airport brands. Always ask for a copy of the damage report at pickup.
  • Big brands often put a $500 to $1,000 hold on your credit card, and some renters saw it charged as a payment or waited weeks to get it back. Dispute unfair charges through your credit card company.
  • Check what the insurance covers (tires, glass, underside) and how high the deductible is, often around $400 to $500. Counters sometimes add insurance without asking, so compare the final price with your online booking.
